Biology of Bacterium Lepisepticum

چکیده
1. Bacterium lepisepticum, Type D, inoculated in small amounts into meat extract broth, pH 7.4, under aerobic conditions failed to grow. Larger inoculations underwent a period of lag before the logarithmic growth phase began. 2. In this medium, dissociation of Microbe D to the variant G occurred readily. 3. A lowered oxygen tension in this broth resulted in growth of small numbers of Type D with no lag and great inhibition of the type dissociation process. 4. Similar optimum growth conditions were obtained by adding to extract broth, under aerobic conditions, autoclaved or unautoclaved rabbit blood in very small amounts, 0.0003 per cent, just sufficient to give a positive benzidine test.

We have been engaged in the study of Baa. lepisepticum infection in rabbits with the purpose of finding out the mechanism which governs its natural prevalence. Thus far we have determined three factors which play essential parts: (1) host susceptibility; (2) microbic distributlon; and (3) microbic virulence. The first two of these have been discussed in previous papers (1); in this and the foll...

Rabbits were bred at The Rockefeller Institute with special relation to protection from exposure to Bacterium lepisepticum. These healthy rabbits were then submitted to intranasal instillation of a given dose of cultures of Bacterium lepisepticum. The results of the inoculation were various according to the natural degree of resistance of the individual animals. The following graded effects cou...

An important manifestation of Bacterium lepisepticum infection in the rabbit is pneumonia, which occurs spontaneously and is producible experimentally. In the course of our studies on the epidemiology of the disease, we have considered certain other phases of the infection--snuffles, otitis media, and the cartier state. Our present effort has been to classify pathologically the pneumonic lesion...

That carders of Bacterium lepisepticum occur in laboratory rabbits and other stocks is of course well known. We have dealt with certain aspects of this matter in earlier papers of this series. Furthermore, as we have pointed out, similar chronic carriers of this organism may be developed experimentally by instilling cultures into the nares of specially bred rabbits which have been protected fro...
متن کاملBacterium Lepisepticum Infection
In this paper we have attempted to describe the manner of spread of an endemic, native, respiratory infection and a method for its control. The essential factor determining the prevalence of such an endemic disease is, we believe, host susceptibility, which is controlled by hereditary and environmental influences. Furthermore, it seems probable that the amount of this population susceptibility ...
